Economy, holidays could lead to extra stress

SCHENECTADY - The tough economic news and shaky job market are enough to stress us out. Add to that the upcoming holidays and you've got the potential for an "emotional perfect storm."

"Unfortunately the more anxious we are the more our worst selves can appear if we're not careful," Family therapist Dr. David Olsen explained.

Olsen says that's because during times of high stress we become less creative and more reactive. Blame it on our biology.

So we have to be aware of changes in our bodies. Headaches, interrupted sleep, tightness in the chest, abuse of alcohol, withdrawing from loved ones are all signs we're crossing into the danger zone.

The antidote is recognizing you're in trouble and make emotional connections.

"The more we connect with people that really get us where there's potential…the more that anxiety can dissipate," Olsen said.

As Olsen explains, attitude is as infectious as a cold. A bad one can spread through a family fast -- just like a good one.

Olsen also suggests we release tension through exercise or meditation and finding little ways to treat ourselves kindly.

If you're feeling overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn, contact your physician, Samaritan Counseling or your local mental health association.
